How the Candles Work
In the centre of the candle is a column of air, when the candle is lit at the top the air column begins to heat up and rise. The rising air column creates a very mild suction at the base, which helps loosen compacted earwax. The beeswax and other ingredients are vapourised making the air inside the candle heavier and it spirals down into the ear canal, setting up pressure waves and gentle sound waves which massage the eardrum. The gentle massage effect is carried onwards from the eardrum to the middle and inner ear. The ear, nose, sinuses and throat are interconnected so this process has the effect of regulating and balancing pressure in the ears and upper respiratory tract.
Historical records may evidence the practice of ear candling as far back as the year 2500 BC. Ancient cultures, including the Egyptians make reference to their use and are believed to have used reeds coated with wax into the ear and then used mud to seal them and prevent the smoke from escaping. It is also reported that in parts of Europe and Asia the use of hollow twigs or glazed cones combined with incense was widely practised.
Ear candles are not suitable for anyone who has had recent ENT surgery, a cochlear implant, an artificial eardrum or has epilepsy. They are not suitable for anyone with: perforation or lack of eardrum, ventilation tubes, auricular drains or grommets, auricular cysts, ear tumours or infections of the ear, skin or scalp. I prefer not to treat pregnant women for this treatment.
